I’ll admit it, I was skeptical about the Luminate Nova when I first got it. Like many people, I tried it a few times, didn’t fully commit to the process, and quickly moved on. Looking back, I don’t think I gave it a fair chance.
That has changed.
I’ve been using the Nova daily, and the impact it has had on my mental wellness has been remarkable. It’s become a valuable part of my routine, helping me slow down, quiet the noise, and find moments of calm in days that often feel overwhelming.
The science behind the Nova is surprisingly simple. The device uses carefully controlled pulses of light that are seen through closed eyelids. These rhythmic light patterns stimulate the visual system and encourage the brain to synchronize with the flashing frequencies. As a result, I experience vivid colours, geometric patterns, and a deeply relaxed state similar to meditation.
What fascinates me is that much of what I see during a session isn’t actually coming from the lights themselves. The brain is creating the patterns and colours internally. It’s a reminder of just how powerful our minds are.
For me, though, the science is only part of the story.
What matters most is how it makes me feel. During a Nova session, the constant chatter in my head seems to quiet down. The stress, anxiety, and heaviness that can accompany depression take a step back, even if only for a little while. Those moments of calm have become something I genuinely look forward to each day.
As someone who spends countless hours behind a camera, I’m always searching for ways to be present in the moment. Photography has long been one of my escapes, allowing me to focus on the beauty around me instead of the struggles within. The Nova has become a similar tool. It gives me a chance to disconnect from the noise of everyday life and reconnect with myself.
The Nova isn’t a cure, and I don’t view it as a replacement for professional mental health care. But as a tool to support mindfulness, relaxation, and overall mental wellness, it has become an important part of my personal journey.
